We love this sweet little frock by Mette. It’s ever so adorable and tops our list of Valentines Day must haves, because the fabric reminds us of many a dress we’ve worn on Valentines Days past. Mette’s modern little girl garments are designed and sewn by Kristin Rasmussen in limited edition and all are absolutely gorgeous, but this one made our hearts skip a beat. The Rosso is an a-line dress constructed from recycled vintage cotton and features bold ‘painterly’ colour blocks of brick red, dark rose + olive on a natural background. Sweet cap sleeves, side seam pockets, fully lined, machine wash cold, hang to dry. It’s perfect, hands down. One of a kind dress in size 4, yours for $46.00, here.

Hand On Heart

We’ve been on a cookie baking kick as of late and our kiddos have been ever grateful. They love to assist in the kitchen, too, so we’ll likely be up to our ears in flour and sugar this coming week. We do our best to find cookie cutters while thrifting, but sometimes we can’t find exactly what we’re looking for. We like these classic cookie cutters we found at Sur La Table, especially the lips and heart in hand. Perfect for little hands with assistance and a great way to spread a little bit of valentine love. .56 cents (yep, 56 cents) and up @ Sur La Table.

Sentimental Heart

il_430xn116349167

It seems there’s consistently been a drooling, tooth cutting tot among the cleeo & bea kiddos for the last few years, so we always have several teethers on hand. We found this little wooden heart teether by Little Sapling Toys and felt it was a must have for the our teething valentines. Each heart is sanded satin smooth, left unfinished and measures 3.75″ from side to side, 2.75″ top to bottom, 1.5″ diameter center hole for easy clutching. And every purchase made contributes to the planting of a tree for the future, so cool. $12.00, here.

Owner Of A Lonely Heart

We heart Shel Silverstein and felt we had to include “The Missing Piece Meets the Big O” among our Valentines Day picks for the mere fact that this book makes us blush. In fact, it was a first Valentines Day gift back in the day and remains on the bookshelf at this cleeo & bea mama’s house. Originally published in 1981, ”The Missing Piece Meets the Big O” is a great story about finding love in unexpected places. Our kiddos are a bit young yet to fully understand the importance of finding one’s missing piece to their big O, but we read it to them anyway. The message is perfect for Valentines Day and reminds how grateful we are to have found our very own missing piece. Oh, love. $16.99 here.

You Don’t Bring Me Flowers Anymore

We remember making many a tissue paper flower and construction paper hearts around Valentine’s Day when we were kiddos. What says love more than the mere act of making something beautiful for your loved ones? We found these paper peonies (a favorite flower) and couldn’t resist buying the kit to make a few of our own with our tots. We’re planning to give them as small tokens to our kiddos’ grandmas, but will keep a few to string and hang in our tots’ rooms. Too cute. Quick assembly and minimal glue, music to our ears. Custom colors and price breaks for bulk, otherwise $2.50 each, here.

We recently picked up these sweet upcycled heart crayons by Chase Dreams at SpielWerk Toys in Portland and couldn’t be happier with them. They’re a fantastic gift for our kiddo valentines. Each set of 10 crayons is made from recycled, non-toxic crayons. Each heart measures 1.75″ in length and width and is .5″ thick, perfect for wee hands learning to draw. Colors include pink, red, orange, yellow, light green, green, sky blue, blue, lavender and purple and crayons are packaged in eco-packaging, now that’s love. We’ll be back for the mustache and fortune cookie crayons, too cute. Excellent value for handmade eco-friends. $5.50, here.

Nothing quite says love like a sweet serenade. And from our kiddos, well, that’s a heart melter. We love this little wooden piano by Schylling. It’s perfect for the burgeoning crooner. Our kiddos love to sing and play  its mini keys, since they are close to the ground and so easy to reach. Constructed from solid wood, this upright piano features 18 keys and a beautiful red lacquer finish. No eco-friend and the pitch is a little bit off, but it’s one of the best and most true sounding kid pianos we’ve found. 12 1/2″x 10″ x 11 1/2″. Ages 2+. $58.95, here.

Thank You, Thank You Very Much 01/04/2010

Admittedly, we’re not always on top of sending thank you cards, but this year our kiddos can get involved, so we’re going to make it a family affair and are determined to get them sent off. We love the idea of personalized stationery for the wee. It is the perfect way to introduce letter writing and thanking family members living far away. Plus, it’s great for kiddos to see their name in print and familiarizes them with the postal service. Minted’s personalized stationery is created by their talented community of designers offering different designs to choose from based on your kiddos personal style. Personalize your child’s favorite design with their name or monogram to give their stationery an individual touch. And get them in the habit of saying thank you. Love it. $35 for 15 cards, here.

If love is a burning flame then we’re on fire for Hushabye Baby Lullaby Renditions of Johnny Cash. This collection of lullaby renditions of classic songs by the man in black is stellar and a perfect gift for any Johnny Cash adoring parents of an infant. Features 12 songs, among them favorites like, “Folsom Prison Blues,” “Jackson” and “Walk The Line.” The xylophone, auto harp and chimes are soothing to babes and adults, alike. And because we have such a deep appreciation for Johnny’s songs, we love to listen to this CD over and over again. A welcome addition to the Hushabye series, this collection makes it possible to listen to Cash’s music without having to edit lyrics, since his lyrics tend to elaborate on some of the rougher moments in his life. Each CD comes in a 100% eco-friendly recycled package, colorfully illustrated with the quirky residents of Hushabye Farm, a character bio, and a healthy baby food recipe, to boot. Love it. $16.98, here.

S-E-E & S-P-E-L-L

This See & Spell puzzle by Melissa & Doug really has been an excellent tool in helping our tots grasp the concept of reading. They get such a kick out of finding the letters and putting the pieces in the right spot. They look at the words and corresponding picture and say, “this word says boat,” it is so cool. The only bummer about this puzzle is that there is no lid, so unfortunately the pieces fall to the floor when kiddo wants to take it off the shelf. Puzzle says 4+, we say you know your kids, but younger siblings, no chewing please. The letters are choking hazards. As with all M & D wooden toys, puzzle is finished with non-toxic lacquers. Includes 72 colorful wooden letters that fit into the 8 two-sided cutout boards to spell three and four-letter words. Found locally at Child’s Play or, $19.99, here.

nikki10-lg

Every year, for the last several, we eagerly anticipate the release of Nikki McClure’s following year calendar. We love her paper cut illustrations and find her work grounding and inspirational. This year her calendar is no exception and we’re excited to hang it in a few weeks. Each month features one of McClure’s paper cuts illustrating acts of every day life like canning peaches, playing in snow or replacing buttons on a shirt and a word, usually a vivacious verb, to ponder for that month, like “reckon”, “invite” and December’s “Eat Out”. Images feature more color than in past calendars and are beautiful. A perfect gift for McClure fans, but a great way to introduce her work to those less familiar. Printed on acid paper with soy based inks. 12″ x 12″. Can’t wait. $16.00, here.

We’re totally nuts for wooden toys and for vehicles large enough to accommodate an active family who likes to travel, so when we found this van made entirely from wood by Voilà, we were smitten. It’s particularly cool, because the top and hatch open and it can fit up to 4 Voilà dolls and a dog, roomy. Perfect for toddlers, a great gift and provides hours of pretend play while on a road trip, perhaps. This little eco-van is constructed from replenishable rubber wood and non-toxic, child safe color stains. Not cheap, but durable and should last through many years and many kiddos. Makes us pine for summer and it’s only December. 5″ x 10″ x 5″. $32.95, here.

Cleo, We Think You’re Swell 12/14/2009

cleo

Now that we’ve opened the door to dollies, we can’t resist them for our kiddos, so when we found cleo by simpli jessi, there was really no question that she would have to live with us. Born to a bookbinder and an experimental gastronomist, cleo makes paint brushes for artists. We absolutely adore her rosy cheeks and would very much like her hairstyle. A durable, good looking and great holiday gift for any kiddo who loves pretend play and is in need of a new dolly to add to their collection. Constructed from linen, cotton, yarn with eco-stuffing and other repurposed materials by simpli jessi, Cleo wears an aline wool skirt, silk blouse and a faux leather shoulder bag. And who could resist the name? Excellent value for a handmade eco-friend. Stands 17″ x 4″. $64.00, here.

Winter Slippers: Check

kinaslippers

It’s the holidays and no winter holiday would be complete without the addition of a brand new pair of slippers for our tots tootsies.  We were excited to find Kina’s line of  lambswool apparel and footwear. Their toddler and infant booties are made from soft natural New Zealand lambswool with thick leather soles for extra durability. designed primarily for indoor use, these slippers should withstand heavy play by the most rough and tumble toddler while keeping their feet warm and dry. Sizes and styles from infant to toddler and up. Kina uses wool from lambs who have naturally passed, too. Kudos. There’s not a lot of time left before the holidays, so if you’d like to give these sweet little slippers, $38.00, look here.

Go Go, Gouache

z_17746_0_3

Before we had tots of our own, we looked forward to the days when we could create a kinder inspired gallery to call our own. Our kiddos are just beginning to draw and paint, but they seemed to really love it and we’re thrilled. Gouache is a water based paint, but has a bit more weight to it than a standard watercolor, creating a thicker, opaque result on paper. We’re adding Djeco’s Gouache to our kiddos art supplies, because a lot of the illustrators we adore swear by the medium and we think it’s darn nifty, too. Package of 12 primary and classic colors for young artists. Perfect for the 3+ crowd, but younger kids can use with assistance. No chewing please. $10.99, here.
