Greatest Hits: Berry Pickin’ Bucket 08/28/2010

Filed under: gifts under $20, play & learn, summer picks, totally toddler — cleeo @ 2:29 am

We’re bringing back some of our faves of Summer this week. In this case we wanted to because any berry picking expedition requires a few tools including a bucket with a handle for independent berry picking toddlers. This little Sand Play set made by Green Toys contains the precursory bucket perfect for small hands with an eco-friendly rope handle, rake and shovel. Plus, a sand castle mold for days at the beach. And once again Green Toys amazes us with a cool product that contributes to improving the health of the planet. By using recycled materials such as recycled milk jugs, they reduce CO² emissions and fossil fuel use. Sweet. $19.99, here.

Divas Are So Magnetic 06/01/2010

divas

Our toddlers love these dress up doll magnets by Gallison. We like to bring this set along in the car because it’s a fun activity, fairly self-contained and keeps kiddos busy while on a road trip. We sometimes even bring a baking sheet, so our kiddos can remove all the pieces from the tin and go to town designing ensembles for their little divas. And of course, we heart the fact that they’re gal musicians, no need to explain if you’ve read our blog. Set includes a hinged tin and three sheets of magnets including doll, clothes and accessories for country, rock and jazz divas. Loads of fun for any aspiring diva. Recommended for the 6 and up set, but our younger ones love it. Be mindful, however, of taste testers if they’re riding in the back seat, too. There are a few small parts that may need to be removed in this instance. $15.00, here.

Mama Loves The National 05/03/2010

Since having kiddos, we’ve sort of lost our ability to keep up with new music, which is difficult to cope with, since our pre-kid years were spent devouring music of all genres. We’ve been counting on old school favorites in our collection to keep us going, but are in desperate need of something new. One band we haven’t been able to get enough of in the last few years has been the National, so much so, we actually traveled more than an hour from home to see them (a pretty rare thing these days). We’re so excited for their upcoming release High Violet and were lucky enough to have heard some of it last week on The New York Times web site. We’re already smitten, so this one is on our Mama’s day wish list even though we won’t be able to hold the goods until after Mother’s Day. What can we say about The National? Not enough great things. We heart their melodic voices, emotive guitars and evocative lyrics. Check them out for yourselves, and then run out and buy this one on May 11th. $17.99 pre-order, here.

Editors’ Pick: Old Deck, New Tricks 04/19/2010

deckspinners

When we think of upcycling, we can’t say skateboard decks are the first resource to pop into our heads, but then again, why not? We love these tiny top spinners by Portland’s Board Games. They’re the perfect toy for kids of all ages and are repurposed from the coolest of materials. Constructed by stacking the layers of three old decks, each spinner is unique and (in their words) “spins like your grandma’s dreidel”. Can’t beat that. Pictured spinner measures 1 ¾” x 2″. One, two and three deck spinners. Dirt cheap and awesome. $10.00 each, here.

Greatest Hits: A Tree Is Good To Have Around

We love books about nature and so do our kiddos, so in honor of Earth Day we thought we’d recycle a review of a cleeo & bea fave book. Janice May Udry’s classic “A Tree Is Nice” is on our list of favorites for a few reasons. Not only is it wholesome and sweet, it teaches our tots that trees are beautiful and quite useful in their living state. Marc Simont’s illustrations are fantastic, too. Originally published in 1956 and a Caldecott winner in 1957, “A Tree Is Nice” is just the kind of message we like to convey to our kiddos about caring for the earth. It encourages them (and us) to slow down, appreciate simple beauty and remember not to take it for granted. We particularly like that Urdy mentions babies and cows can nap in the shade of a tree. Too cute. Used and new from $3.50, here.

Stick With The Letters 02/15/2010

We distinctly remember spending a lot of time at the foot of our fridge perusing the alphabet and spelling out first words like cat and go, when we were tots. Melissa & Doug’s magnetic letters are bigger than the plastic magnetic letters we remember and our kiddos love them. We’ve had ours for over 6 months and they’ve held up really well. The case is a MUST and we’re so glad it comes with a lid because we play with our letters almost every day and have NOT lost any of them, which is amazing. The letters come in bright, primary colors and each letter has the same color for upper and lower case making it easier for little one’s to find the BIG A and the little a. Magnets are cool and give learning the alphabet a different spin, when you can stick them to a surface and move the pieces around. $11.95, here.

Greatest Hits: Don’t Eat Your Numbers

munchkin1

Our kiddos love to recite their ABCs and 123s in the tub, so we’ve been on a mission to find some eco-friendly foam letters, but have had no luck. We’ve been using Munchkin’s set for awhile and the kiddos love them. They’ve provided entertainment, education and a longer bath time for our tot, but Munchkin is one of those companies we’re just not sure about. Packaging and their website claim this product is non-toxic, but we’ve been reading some things that has parents questioning this claim. We have seen nothing funky about them and are particularly picky about what our tots put in their mouths, so no chewing here.We just watch closely while they’re using them. Can’t recommend as eco-friendly but kids do love them and they’re great for helping toddlers to master their numbers and alphabet. $8.00, here.

We’ve been on a cookie baking kick as of late and our kiddos have been ever grateful. They love to assist in the kitchen, too, so we’ll likely be up to our ears in flour and sugar this coming week. We do our best to find cookie cutters while thrifting, but sometimes we can’t find exactly what we’re looking for. We like these classic cookie cutters we found at Sur La Table, especially the lips and heart in hand. Perfect for little hands with assistance and a great way to spread a little bit of valentine love. .56 cents (yep, 56 cents) and up @ Sur La Table.

Sentimental Heart

il_430xn116349167

It seems there’s consistently been a drooling, tooth cutting tot among the cleeo & bea kiddos for the last few years, so we always have several teethers on hand. We found this little wooden heart teether by Little Sapling Toys and felt it was a must have for the our teething valentines. Each heart is sanded satin smooth, left unfinished and measures 3.75″ from side to side, 2.75″ top to bottom, 1.5″ diameter center hole for easy clutching. And every purchase made contributes to the planting of a tree for the future, so cool. $12.00, here.

You Don’t Bring Me Flowers Anymore

We remember making many a tissue paper flower and construction paper hearts around Valentine’s Day when we were kiddos. What says love more than the mere act of making something beautiful for your loved ones? We found these paper peonies (a favorite flower) and couldn’t resist buying the kit to make a few of our own with our tots. We’re planning to give them as small tokens to our kiddos’ grandmas, but will keep a few to string and hang in our tots’ rooms. Too cute. Quick assembly and minimal glue, music to our ears. Custom colors and price breaks for bulk, otherwise $2.50 each, here.

We recently picked up these sweet upcycled heart crayons by Chase Dreams at SpielWerk Toys in Portland and couldn’t be happier with them. They’re a fantastic gift for our kiddo valentines. Each set of 10 crayons is made from recycled, non-toxic crayons. Each heart measures 1.75″ in length and width and is .5″ thick, perfect for wee hands learning to draw. Colors include pink, red, orange, yellow, light green, green, sky blue, blue, lavender and purple and crayons are packaged in eco-packaging, now that’s love. We’ll be back for the mustache and fortune cookie crayons, too cute. Excellent value for handmade eco-friends. $5.50, here.

If love is a burning flame then we’re on fire for Hushabye Baby Lullaby Renditions of Johnny Cash. This collection of lullaby renditions of classic songs by the man in black is stellar and a perfect gift for any Johnny Cash adoring parents of an infant. Features 12 songs, among them favorites like, “Folsom Prison Blues,” “Jackson” and “Walk The Line.” The xylophone, auto harp and chimes are soothing to babes and adults, alike. And because we have such a deep appreciation for Johnny’s songs, we love to listen to this CD over and over again. A welcome addition to the Hushabye series, this collection makes it possible to listen to Cash’s music without having to edit lyrics, since his lyrics tend to elaborate on some of the rougher moments in his life. Each CD comes in a 100% eco-friendly recycled package, colorfully illustrated with the quirky residents of Hushabye Farm, a character bio, and a healthy baby food recipe, to boot. Love it. $16.98, here.

Go Go, Gouache 12/14/2009

z_17746_0_3

Before we had tots of our own, we looked forward to the days when we could create a kinder inspired gallery to call our own. Our kiddos are just beginning to draw and paint, but they seemed to really love it and we’re thrilled. Gouache is a water based paint, but has a bit more weight to it than a standard watercolor, creating a thicker, opaque result on paper. We’re adding Djeco’s Gouache to our kiddos art supplies, because a lot of the illustrators we adore swear by the medium and we think it’s darn nifty, too. Package of 12 primary and classic colors for young artists. Perfect for the 3+ crowd, but younger kids can use with assistance. No chewing please. $10.99, here.

Greatest Hits: Gertie, You Da Best

ball-gertie

We’ve been trying to find a ball equivalent to or better than Gertie, but have yet to find one we like as much, which is why they top our gifts under $20 list. Gertie balls are sticky, not really sticky, but they have an interesting surface, making them easy for tots to grasp and catch. They’re also inflatable with a straw, so parents can control their squishiness and level of graspability. Our kiddos prefer them to other balls and have become quite proficient at ball play because of these cool balls. Made from non-toxic, latex-free PVC, Gertie balls aren’t tip-top in the eco-friend department, but they’re kid safe and make game-play a breeze for the most wee of wee ones. They’re durable too, have survived a few dog chews without deflation and they’re an excellent value. Available in several styles and colors, from nobby to animal friend Gerties. Original measures 9″ in diameter. $5.95, here.

Remember Hotwheels and Matchbox cars? We were a little infatuated with the Dukes of Hazard and had Daisy’s Plymouth Roadrunner, which we faithfully took everywhere for instant play. Although we grew up playing with toxic toys, we’re a little bit wiser now and are going to skip out on the Roadrunner as an appropriate teething and learning toy for our kiddos. We found the perfect eco-friendly and safe alternative for gift list under $20 in Educo’s Little Autos, made by the German company HaPe. Constructed from sustainable natural wood and finished with child-safe, non-toxic water-based paints Little Autos come in four vibrant, fun colors and have a cool modern design. Vroom, vroom baby. 10 months +. $8.00, here.
