Papa Loves St. Johns 06/14/2010

Filed under: mamas & papas, wear & diaper — cleeo @ 9:04 am

If you don’t live in Portland, you may not see the appeal of a t-shirt emblazoned with a steel suspension bridge, but if you do live here, you’ll know exactly why a Portland papa may love it. The St. Johns bridge, in lovely St. Johns, Oregon, is iconic. Built over a two year period from 1929-31, this gothic looking bridge was (at the time) the longest suspension bridge built west of Detroit. It’s huge and pretty amazing to both drive across and stand under. We recently bought this tee for a friend and he won’t take it off. Another reason why we thought dear old dad may think it’s pretty nifty. Printed from an original illustration by Colosso on an American Apparel t-shirt. Hand screen printed on order. Lots of colors to choose from. Just a note, AA tees are a bit snug. $23.00, here.

Papa Loves Richie & Margo

tenenbaum

Oh, how we love the Tenenbaums, actually any film directed by Wes Anderson, but the Tenenbaums kind of took the cake. We saw this film long ago with the men who our kiddos now call papa, and we were obsessed with this wacky family for awhile. We love these prints by Etsy artist Retro Whale of the Tenenbaums. They would make the perfect Father’s Day gift for any Dad who holds a soft spot in his heart for Gene Hackman and Bill Murray. Set of 4 hand drawn and then digitally colored art Prints. Measure 5″x 5” each with a border for framing. Printed on Epson archival matte fine art paper with pigment inks. Prints are signed and shipped in a bend proof mailer. $48, here.

Papa Loves To Cuddle

daddycuddles600

We can’t think of a sweeter gift for papa. “Daddy Cuddles” authored by Anne Gutman and illustrated by Gorg Halle is one book that our tots love to read with their dads over and over again. We love the cute illustrations, are particularly smitten with the daddy monkies and our kiddos have learned the names of baby animals from this book, too. A great way to express love between babes and their papas, a great book to give any newbie papa, or really any papa for that matter. Board book, perfect for toddlers and younger. $5.95, here.

Papa Loves To Stink Pretty

Filed under: mamas & papas, summer picks — cleeo @ 9:01 am

We’re not terribly attracted to cologne, but a fresh smelling papa is pretty great. We love Burt’s Bees products for men and so do the papas we know. BB’s soaps are not too manly, natural, but still do the job of lathering and cleaning, and we find ourselves using them when we have them in the house. In particular their bar soap. It smells so good. Contains vegetable soap base, kaolin, citrus aurantium bergamia (bergamot) fruit oil, citrus medica limonum (lemon) peel oil, citrus aurantium dulcis (orange) peel oil, pogostemon cablin (patchouli) oil, citrus reticulata (tangerine/petitgrain) leaf oil, abies sibirica (fir needle) oil, rosmarinus officinalis (rosemary) leaf oil. No junk, hooray. Perfect small gift for papa. 4 oz. bar, $4.00, here.

Papa Loves Camping

Filed under: go for a walk or a ride, mamas & papas, summer picks — cleeo @ 9:00 am

The cleeo & bea papas love a good guide book and ones that feature camping and hiking are at the top of their lists. One of the cleeo & bea families are about to embark on a road trip to California and we’ve been perusing this book for the last month, but you could insert your own title, based on where you live or  where you want to go. We really like the Moon travel guides because they’re pretty thorough, down to amenities and ratings, tent camping and other tips about camping amidst bear. This guide in particular covers 1,400 camping spots, family destinations (thank you) and scenic ratings. Love that.  Great for any adventuring papa at the beginning of the summer. $23.95, here.

Ultimate Car Caddy 06/01/2010

CarCaddy

We’ve been drooling over this car organizer by Sewn Natural for a while now. It’s just the kind of caddy we’ve been looking for with a ton of pockets to house all kinds of necessities. And the fabric is to die for. Constructed from three layers of fabric (back yellow cotton, inner cotton batting and outer designer fabric, Ugly Duckling Galosh by Lizzy House). And each of the carefully designed, different sized pockets is lined with velcro closures and accordian pleats. The lower strap of the organizer will fit around car seat measuring (through the crease between seat and seat back) 49″-51″. And strap is adjustable by 4″ of velcro on each end of the strap. Entire caddy measures 25″x 14″. Gorgeous and durable, plus machine washable. Love. Custom orders, too. Price is right for quality and craftsmanship. $75.00, here.

Mama Loves Screen Printed Paper 05/03/2010

It’s all about celebrating mamas this week, so we’ve compiled a few items that have been on our wish lists for when we’re feeling plush and not so guilty about splurging on ourselves. We’ve been drooling over this silkscreen print, by artist Wayne Pate of Good Shape Design, for about a year. We found it at one of our favorite online shops, Three Potato Four and  think it’s high time we treat ourselves to it, since it’s Mama’s Day in a few days. The orange+red print appropriately titled “Flock” reminds us of vintage 60s art and the pyramid of birds is quite sweet. And though we want this piece for ourselves, we’re pretty sure the kiddos will love it, too. Print measures 18″ x 24″ and ships rolled in a sturdy mailing tube. Print is listed as out of stock, but can be ordered, may take a little bit longer. $35.00, here.

Mama Loves Minoux

Our wee ones are just about through the taste testing phase, so we’ve just started to wear a little more jewelry again and always welcome a beautiful bauble or two around Mama’s day. One of our favorite  local jewelry makers is Minoux. Their pieces are simple, beautiful and inspired by things found in nature. We’ve owned a few pairs of Minoux earrings and feel super fab everytime we put them on. Constructed from sterling silver, 14kt gold fill and various other gems. We also just found out that they can replace a lost earring, quite perfect for mamas like us who always seem to lose things. This pair measures 2¼” long, beautiful. $59.00, here.

Mama Loves The National

Since having kiddos, we’ve sort of lost our ability to keep up with new music, which is difficult to cope with, since our pre-kid years were spent devouring music of all genres. We’ve been counting on old school favorites in our collection to keep us going, but are in desperate need of something new. One band we haven’t been able to get enough of in the last few years has been the National, so much so, we actually traveled more than an hour from home to see them (a pretty rare thing these days). We’re so excited for their upcoming release High Violet and were lucky enough to have heard some of it last week on The New York Times web site. We’re already smitten, so this one is on our Mama’s day wish list even though we won’t be able to hold the goods until after Mother’s Day. What can we say about The National? Not enough great things. We heart their melodic voices, emotive guitars and evocative lyrics. Check them out for yourselves, and then run out and buy this one on May 11th. $17.99 pre-order, here.

Mama Loves To Ride

It’s official, our 1969 Schwinn Breeze has seen its days and done its job through many owners, including this cleeo & bea mama, plus, we feel pretty silly riding it around town with so many shmancy new commuter bikes on the road.  We’ve been researching city mama bicycles and have found a few that we really like. We particularly admire Workcycles’ Kruisframe Step-through. It’s pretty much perfect, made for tall gals and has both front and back carriers for sundries and childs’ seats. It’s quite good looking constructed with a hand-brazed, lugged steel frame, oversized tubing, zinc carbonate primer and a wear resistant powdercoat, with 28″ wheels and special double wall rims, puncture resistant Schwalbe Marathon tires, and way too many cool features to list here, but we especially love that it comes equipped with a brass bell and is meant to be left outside. Our biggest dilemma is that Workcycles is based in the Netherlands, but we did find a few of their bikes locally, here. Prices around 1K+.

Mama Loves To (Vita) Mix

Okay, we know that including an appliance on our list of Mother’s day picks won’t rock every mama’s world, but we recently purchased the Vita Mix Turbo Blender and felt compelled to share its super blender powers with you because it’s AMAZING. We were sold when we saw a live demo of this blender. It blends everything to a very smooth consistency, is perfect for making hummus and our babe’s foods with no need to prep anything because the blender is so powerful. This turbo machine  makes us feel healthy and a little stealthy because we’re able to sneak all sorts of veggies into our kiddo’s smoothies. Hooray! Cleaning is also a snap, too. Not cheap, but has been worth every penny. $379.95, here.

deckspinners

When we think of upcycling, we can’t say skateboard decks are the first resource to pop into our heads, but then again, why not? We love these tiny top spinners by Portland’s Board Games. They’re the perfect toy for kids of all ages and are repurposed from the coolest of materials. Constructed by stacking the layers of three old decks, each spinner is unique and (in their words) “spins like your grandma’s dreidel”. Can’t beat that. Pictured spinner measures 1 ¾” x 2″. One, two and three deck spinners. Dirt cheap and awesome. $10.00 each, here.

Dig Your Hands In The Dirt

Did you know that by planting a tree, you’re not only protecting the environment by creating an oxygen filter and storm water tun-off interceptor but, you could be providing shelter and food for humans and other animals? You’re also positively influencing climate and restoring a depleted natural resource. We think planting a tree on Earth Day is a great activity for the whole family. The kiddos will love it, so if you have the green space and can accommodate another tree, we say, go for it. If you don’t have enough room and would like to get involved in tree planting in your community, look for tree planting organizations in your area. In Portland, Friends Of Trees are working on green space initiatives and neighborhood tree planting and are always looking for volunteers. We rate this experience at the top of our rating scale.

Compost & Chickens In The City? Yup. 04/05/2010

Filed under: mamas & papas — cleeo @ 9:04 am

We love living in the city, but we also very much enjoy the charms of the farm. Just the other day, we were on a walk with our tots and heard chickens clucking in many backyards along the way. That’s Portland. We’re not brave enough to raise our own chickens yet, nervous that dog may get carried away, but our neighbors have them and share their eggs from time to time. We love this guide to building the urban homestead. It’s perfect for city dwellers ready to dabble in canning, composting, cooking with solar power and raising chickens. We agree that sustainablity is the way to go and are making great strides in our little families by building rain barrels, composting and growing some of our own food. Our kiddos love to pitch in and find the composting and recycling process oh, so fascinating. The expanded version (pictured and coming soon) of “the urban homestead” by Kelly Coyne and Erik Knutzen will feature some new projects not found in the original like, how to preserve tomatoes, make soda bread and how to store grain with dry ice. Fun. $16.95 for the original or $17.95 for expanded (preorder).

Soundtrack To Sleep 03/29/2010

beach-house-devotion

From the earliest days of parenthood, we’ve often dug through our own music stash for sweet songs to soothe our babes. Our youngest tot was born right around the time that Beach House’s Devotion was released and we’ve listened to it on loop for almost two years now. We seriously can’t believe we can still stomach it, but it really is the album of sleep at this cleeo & bea mama’s house, and works like a charm every time. The music is reminiscent of 90s Mazzy Star and we love this collection, their second release, because it’s pretty and dreamlike. We still don’t know any of the lyrics because they blend in so nicely with the music, but the babes love being soothed to sleep by the dreamy organ and swirling guitar. Favorite songs include “Gila” and “D.A.R.L.I.N.G”. Great stuff, highly recommended. $12.99, here
