Our tots are newbie students this year and though their school day is limited only to a few hours and snack is provided, we still love finding convenient and green solutions for when we’re on the go. Toddlers (at least the ones we know) seem to graze in between heavy play time, so we like to have snacks on hand at all times. We recently picked up a few of these snack-sacks by snackTAXI at our local grocer and we think they’re pretty nifty. Perfect for dry snacks like bunnies and raisins, these little pouches are easy to carry and washable. Can be used for carrot sticks and other fruit, too. SnackTAXI makes several styles including sandwich and snack-sacks from super cute fabrics. Measures 6″ x 4.5″. $6.95, here.

Greatest Hits: Our Favorite Duo

Filed under: eat it up, yum — cleeo @ 3:43 am

We’ve tried just about every food storage container on the market and have to say LunchBots are among the best for packing lunch or snacks. We really like their duo container because it has a divider to keep dry and perishable foods separate, so less mess. No soup though, they’re not liquid tight. We also love that LunchBots works with schools to educate parents on safer alternatives to plastic while raising funds for schools. Durable, we’ve had ours for almost a year, and good looking. Dishwasher safe. Lid color is powder coated with a non VOC finish. Lab certified lead-free. 18/8 stainless steel. 6.25″ x 4.5″ x 1.74″. $14.99 each, here.

Pack Up For A Picinic 05/17/2010

gel_002_blu

We love a nifty container to pack our picnic goodies in and think bento boxes are the perfect solution to clean and efficient storage. This bento lunch container is great because it can keep food cool for hours with its innovative gel layer. No eco-friend, but darn cute and doing the planet a favor by reusing boxes instead of  plastic bags. Set should last until going on a picnic with your family is no longer cool. Lid contains innovative Gel-Cool refrigerant that keeps food at safe temperature for 3-4 hours. Two stackable, bento-style food containers can be used solo or duo. Adjustable inner compartments make room for different snack options. And boxes are held together with a sturdy, stretchy band. Microwavable and dishwasher safe. Made in Japan. $35.95, here.

Did Someone Say Tea?

Filed under: eat it up, yum, play & learn, totally toddler — cleeo @ 9:00 am

schylling-tin-tea-set

Our tots love to host tea parties, which is great because we enjoy drinking tea and heart pretend play. This tea set by Schylling ranks as the best present from grandma to date! Our toddler couldn’t put it down for 2 weeks straight. She even wanted to sleep with it at night. There’s just something so sweet and classic about having your first tea party. She likes to serve chocolate tea and wine at her parties and also enjoys giving mama and papa “nibblets” of her favorite treats on the plates. Our younger tot loves to gum up the tea set and smack the plates together. It does have a rather nice sound. Note: We had to remove the tea set lid so our little one could play with it. It was a definite choking hazard, but all other pieces are good to go. Easy for little hands to grasp and easy to clean as well, super lightweight and comes with its own suitcase. We wish the set was a little less girly, but other than that, we’re smitten. $17.99, here.

When we go to the zoo, we often spend the better part of a day there, so we need to bring snacks aplenty with us. We can’t really say enough great things about these handy and healthy fruit snacks by Peter Rabbit Organics. We recently found them on a road trip and were thrilled. They’re perfect for travel and our kiddos love them. There’s something totally fascinating about squeezing yummy fruit through a tiny hole. Made from pure, organic fruit, certified by the USDA, and whenever possible fruit is supplied by local suppliers in Oregon. Fruit has a thick, smooth texture and BPA free packages aren’t diluted with water or  juice. Not so sure these packages are recyclable, but maybe that’s next. Good stuff. $15.08 per 10-pack, here.

Filed under: eat it up, yum, mamas & papas, totally toddler — cleeo @ 9:05 am

mylunchbox

It’s not easy coming up with original meals for the kiddos, let alone options that are healthy, easy to transport and taste good. And we’re pretty sure they’re sick of almond butter sandwiches, so we looked to “My Lunch Box: 50 Recipes for Kids To Take To School” for inspiration. Author Hilary Shevlin Karmilowicz is a former chef and the author of “My A to Z Recipe Box”. Her recipes include salads, snacks and some very inventive sandwiches. We love the zucchini cupcakes.  6-1/2 x 4-7/8 x 4 in; 50 recipe cards, 15 blank cards, 2 sticker sheets, cutey full-color illustrations by Rebecca Bradley. $16.95, here.

As has been noted, space is lacking in this cleeo & bea mama’s wee abode. Our kitchen shelves are often stacked with precariously balanced jars and boxes, but we recently found a solution to the baby food jar problem in this modern and nifty space saver by Skip Hop. We love the Chow baby food jar organizer, it’s prevented a few minor injuries from falling jars. The shelves on the Chow are designed to display jar labels, shelves rotates independently for east access Chow can be set up with either two shelves or three, making it customizable for any sized space. Love that. And once our kiddos have moved out of jarred food, why not use the Chow for herbs and spices? Measures 9 1/2″ inches x 15″ x 9.5″ deep. $24.00, here.

Little Big Kid Booster

prince-lion-heart-booster

Our toddler has retired their high chair, so we thought it was high time we invest in a booster seat. We researched quite a few and settled on the Prince Lionheart booster, here’s why. We love the fact that this seat is waterproof and slip resistant. Kiddo is going through a phase where she likes to spill her water and also stands up in her seat to reach across the table. With this material, we don’t have to worry that she’ll slip. Also, we love the bright, vibrant color of the Lionheart. It’s cheery. Measures 7″ x 14″. Manufactured in Canada. Includes nifty carrying case. Assuming the foam is not eco-friendly, so no chewing please. Price is right. $34.99, here.

Straight From The Berry Patch

berry-patch

We must admit, we’re not sure where we’d be without Annie’s Homegrown. We love their products and eat them often. Their trademarked bunny shape makes foods fun for the kiddos and we feel completely at ease feeding their organic and sustainably grown goodies to our wee ones. We recently tried Annie’s new Organic Berry Patch Bunny Fruit Snacks and they were a real crowd pleaser. The mix of strawberry, cherry and raspberry flavored bunnies are great tasting and the texture is chewy but not too. When our tots like a snack they carry fistfuls around the house and in this case that’s exactly what they did. Made with real USDA certified organic fruit juice and packed with 100% Daily Value of Vitamin C, you can’t go wrong. Gelatin free. No junk. Dog loves them, too, but what doesn’t he love? Recyclable packaging to boot. Widely available, but just in case, $16.55 for four pouches, here.

Food On A Bender

boon-bender-blue

One of the cleeo & bea tots has recently graduated from using her hands as utensils to the real thing and though we’ve tried a few other types we’ve really liked, we wanted to check out something new. We opted for boon’s bendable fork and spoon mainly because we were curious. And guess what? They work pretty well. Our little one is holding her spoon and food actually stays put, because the heads bend. Perfect for developing motor skills. Adjustable heads for wee hands that can be straightened as kiddo learns to hold and maneuver. BPA, phthalate and PVC free. 10% of boon’s profits go to children’s charities, kudos. $5.99 set, here.

munchler

One of our tots’ little friends carries a munchler lunch bag. We’ve admired it from a far for a while and here’s why. Not only does this lunch satchel resemble one of our favorite mammals, the tiger; it also converts from storage to place mat. Munchlers are the creation of Built NY and children’s book illustrator Stephen Savage and we think they make the perfect compact lunch pack solution. Lead tested, kid and food safe, the munchler is insulated, too. Sold. Excellent value. Four mammals of varying dimension. Benny measures 7.5” x 5” x 7″. $9.99 each, here.

Mish Mash: Yum 12/14/2009

Filed under: eat it up, yum, holiday picks — cleeo @ 9:00 am

mishmash

Finding new, healthy and interesting snacks for our kiddos can be a challenge, especially ones that won’t end up crushed in their car seats. This might seem like an odd thing to add to our list of gifts under $20 and maybe a stretch as a stocking stuffer, true, but why not? Organic food should be treated like the gift it is. We recently tried Plum organics mish mash snacks and they were a hit. This neat little package is like a chunky fruit drink that our kiddos can keep contained while on the go. Our one year old easily figured out what to do with the container and once she tasted the fruit within, she kept on squeezing. Each mish mash contains 100% USDA certified organic fruit puree with no sugar added in a self-contained package perfect for small hands. Child-safe, resealable cap requires adult assistance. BPA free packaging. Sold individually in Portland at New Seasons Market, beyond from $20.58, for 26 packs, here.
