We love Nordic Naturals products and so do our kiddos. We’ve been using their fish oil for some time, but have to admit our favorite is their Nordic Berries Multivitamin Treats, because they taste unbelievably good. It’s so hard to find a great tasting multi for tots, usually they have a chalky texture and unnatural flavor. Nordic Naturals multi is gummi (always a favorite) and they have a delicious, sweet-and-sour citrus taste that kind of makes you want to eat the whole bottle in one sitting. We don’t do this and ration these little treats carefully to our kiddos, but yes, they’re that good. Nordic Berries contain no junk, are pectin based with no gelatin or added coloring and contain rice syrup, sucrose and cane juice to add a wee bit of sweetness. Manufactured with exceptional raw materials like cloud berries, which are packed with vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. Look here for list of ingredients and vitamin and mineral information. 120 gummis, if you can’t find locally, $21.95, here.

If love is a burning flame then we’re on fire for Hushabye Baby Lullaby Renditions of Johnny Cash. This collection of lullaby renditions of classic songs by the man in black is stellar and a perfect gift for any Johnny Cash adoring parents of an infant. Features 12 songs, among them favorites like, “Folsom Prison Blues,” “Jackson” and “Walk The Line.” The xylophone, auto harp and chimes are soothing to babes and adults, alike. And because we have such a deep appreciation for Johnny’s songs, we love to listen to this CD over and over again. A welcome addition to the Hushabye series, this collection makes it possible to listen to Cash’s music without having to edit lyrics, since his lyrics tend to elaborate on some of the rougher moments in his life. Each CD comes in a 100% eco-friendly recycled package, colorfully illustrated with the quirky residents of Hushabye Farm, a character bio, and a healthy baby food recipe, to boot. Love it. $16.98, here.

This See & Spell puzzle by Melissa & Doug really has been an excellent tool in helping our tots grasp the concept of reading. They get such a kick out of finding the letters and putting the pieces in the right spot. They look at the words and corresponding picture and say, “this word says boat,” it is so cool. The only bummer about this puzzle is that there is no lid, so unfortunately the pieces fall to the floor when kiddo wants to take it off the shelf. Puzzle says 4+, we say you know your kids, but younger siblings, no chewing please. The letters are choking hazards. As with all M & D wooden toys, puzzle is finished with non-toxic lacquers. Includes 72 colorful wooden letters that fit into the 8 two-sided cutout boards to spell three and four-letter words. Found locally at Child’s Play or, $19.99, here.

Vintage inspired children’s illustrations are always a big hit with the cleeo & bea gals. We recently found Pixel organics designs and are enamored by their line of bedding. It’s sweet, gender neutral, bright and would be a great addition to any kid’s room. Pixel’s bedding includes crib, toddler and twin sets and additional pillow shams. Designs are great looking and bedding is soft and durable, made from 100% certified organic cotton sateen and 22o thread count. We feel great about supporting a company whose efforts to protect the planet are among the best in their industry. They use Refill, regenerated PET (PolyEthylene Terephthalate) fibers from processing discarded bottles, natural wool and cotton in all of their bedding, pillows and mattresses. Whoop .We think Pixel’s pillow cases are very cute and can easily work them in with bedding we already own. Fits standard pillow, 20″ x 26″ finish with double back closure. $36.00 each, here.

Every year, for the last several, we eagerly anticipate the release of Nikki McClure’s following year calendar. We love her paper cut illustrations and find her work grounding and inspirational. This year her calendar is no exception and we’re excited to hang it in a few weeks. Each month features one of McClure’s paper cuts illustrating acts of every day life like canning peaches, playing in snow or replacing buttons on a shirt and a word, usually a vivacious verb, to ponder for that month, like “reckon”, “invite” and December’s “Eat Out”. Images feature more color than in past calendars and are beautiful. A perfect gift for McClure fans, but a great way to introduce her work to those less familiar. Printed on acid paper with soy based inks. 12″ x 12″. Can’t wait. $16.00, here.

We’re totally nuts for wooden toys and for vehicles large enough to accommodate an active family who likes to travel, so when we found this van made entirely from wood by Voilà, we were smitten. It’s particularly cool, because the top and hatch open and it can fit up to 4 Voilà dolls and a dog, roomy. Perfect for toddlers, a great gift and provides hours of pretend play while on a road trip, perhaps. This little eco-van is constructed from replenishable rubber wood and non-toxic, child safe color stains. Not cheap, but durable and should last through many years and many kiddos. Makes us pine for summer and it’s only December. 5″ x 10″ x 5″. $32.95, here.

We’re constantly changing things around at this cleeo & bea mama’s house. We move furniture, paint walls, among other things. Some may consider this an illness, but we find it quite therapeutic. Same goes for our kiddos rooms, but more of necessity than anything else. We’re planning a big change in the new year to allow some wall space for such things as these fantastic wall murals by Chuck E Byrd. We love this sweet mama and babe giraffe pair. They’re great looking, made from vinyl and are rather large. Mama giraffe measures 63″ x 26″ and her babe at 24″ x 13″. Each decal is made at the time of order, so you can choose from a range of 40 colors to match your kiddo’s room. Works best on any smooth surface. Great price for what they are. $62.50 for both, here.

Cleo, We Think You’re Swell 12/14/2009

cleo

Now that we’ve opened the door to dollies, we can’t resist them for our kiddos, so when we found cleo by simpli jessi, there was really no question that she would have to live with us. Born to a bookbinder and an experimental gastronomist, cleo makes paint brushes for artists. We absolutely adore her rosy cheeks and would very much like her hairstyle. A durable, good looking and great holiday gift for any kiddo who loves pretend play and is in need of a new dolly to add to their collection. Constructed from linen, cotton, yarn with eco-stuffing and other repurposed materials by simpli jessi, Cleo wears an aline wool skirt, silk blouse and a faux leather shoulder bag. Winter Slippers: Check

kinaslippers

It’s the holidays and no winter holiday would be complete without the addition of a brand new pair of slippers for our tots tootsies.  We were excited to find Kina’s line of  lambswool apparel and footwear. Their toddler and infant booties are made from soft natural New Zealand lambswool with thick leather soles for extra durability. designed primarily for indoor use, these slippers should withstand heavy play by the most rough and tumble toddler while keeping their feet warm and dry. Sizes and styles from infant to toddler and up. Kina uses wool from lambs who have naturally passed, too. Kudos. There’s not a lot of time left before the holidays, so if you’d like to give these sweet little slippers, $38.00, look here.

Go Go, Gouache

z_17746_0_3

Before we had tots of our own, we looked forward to the days when we could create a kinder inspired gallery to call our own. Our kiddos are just beginning to draw and paint, but they seemed to really love it and we’re thrilled. Gouache is a water based paint, but has a bit more weight to it than a standard watercolor, creating a thicker, opaque result on paper. We’re adding Djeco’s Gouache to our kiddos art supplies, because a lot of the illustrators we adore swear by the medium and we think it’s darn nifty, too. Package of 12 primary and classic colors for young artists. Perfect for the 3+ crowd, but younger kids can use with assistance. No chewing please. $10.99, here.

Beautiful Fraulein Friends

Make new friends, but keep the old. One is silver and the other’s gold. We learned that song when we were little girls and it has always stuck with us. It’s a great thing when you find a good friend, someone that has your back and because of that, we’re really hoping to pass the value of girl bonds on to our daughters. We recently discovered  this wee print of two rather stylish girls and thought they exemplified best friends. They also kind of remind us of a couple of girls we used to know. Love the matching bracelets. Print is an original illustration by Anke of Anke’s little shop on Etsy and think it’s irresistible. Each original pen and ink print is scanned into her computer where she adds color and texture, then printed on an inkjet printer. Would look perfect in any girl’s room, but anywhere else, too. 3.3″ x 3.5″ $25.00, here.

Whole Lotta Love

cover_final.indd

It’s been utter madness around this cleeo & bea mama’s house recently. With holiday  preparation and juggling the little family we haven’t had much mama me time. We’re looking forward to the new year, so we can break out our amateur sewing skills and try our hand at some of Lotta Jansdotter’s projects in her “simple sewing” book. We’re enamored by the practical household items Jansdotter designs and the 24 projects she includes in this book are no exception. Our favorites are the straightforward kitchen towel pattern with loop for easy hanging, the curtain with pockets and the bed pocket is a great solution to night stand clutter or would be perfect on or near a diaper changing table. This is an excellent gift for anyone who loves to sew and is nuts about scandinavian design. Patterns included in a good looking pocket inside the book.$24.95, here.

Mish Mash: Yum

mishmash

Finding new, healthy and interesting snacks for our kiddos can be a challenge, especially ones that won’t end up crushed in their car seats. This might seem like an odd thing to add to our list of gifts under $20 and maybe a stretch as a stocking stuffer, true, but why not? Organic food should be treated like the gift it is. We recently tried Plum organics mish mash snacks and they were a hit. This neat little package is like a chunky fruit drink that our kiddos can keep contained while on the go. Our one year old easily figured out what to do with the container and once she tasted the fruit within, she kept on squeezing. Each mish mash contains 100% USDA certified organic fruit puree with no sugar added in a self-contained package perfect for small hands. Child-safe, resealable cap requires adult assistance. BPA free packaging. Sold individually in Portland at New Seasons Market, beyond from $20.58, for 26 packs, here.

Greatest Hits: Gertie, You Da Best

ball-gertie

We’ve been trying to find a ball equivalent to or better than Gertie, but have yet to find one we like as much, which is why they top our gifts under $20 list. Gertie balls are sticky, not really sticky, but they have an interesting surface, making them easy for tots to grasp and catch. They’re also inflatable with a straw, so parents can control their squishiness and level of graspability. Our kiddos prefer them to other balls and have become quite proficient at ball play because of these cool balls. Made from non-toxic, latex-free PVC, Gertie balls aren’t tip-top in the eco-friend department, but they’re kid safe and make game-play a breeze for the most wee of wee ones. They’re durable too, have survived a few dog chews without deflation and they’re an excellent value. Available in several styles and colors, from nobby to animal friend Gerties. Original measures 9″ in diameter. $5.95, here.
