We’re selective when it comes to the mammals we let take residence in our kiddos’ rooms. They take up space and space is spare, so we have a few rules. One of which is, most mammals must be small in scale, but big on charm. We  love Ostheimer’s wooden animals because they fit the bill. They’re quite handsome and very durable. Constructed from maple or ash wood, Ostheimer mammals and other figures are sanded, painted with non-toxic stain, and varnished by hand. Excellent value and a toy that will last through many kiddos. Stands 5″ tall. $24.30, here.

Large And Small

rhino

It seems only fitting that the largest of mammals be represented by the most wee of the human mammal variety. We love this onesie by bioME5. It pays well deserved homage to a rare mammal that we love, the rhinoceros, and the design is rather nifty. Not only is this rhino shown in its realistic form, sporting its good looks, but the letters are intentionally inverted and readable to the wearer. Why not? As with all bioME5 products, this baby body suit is made with super soft, certified organic and unbleached cotton in fair trade facilities in the USA, tagless (thank you) and preshrunk. Done deal. $26.00, here.

Forgive Us, Mr. Grumps

Filed under: read & listen, totally toddler — cleeo @ 9:02 am

lyle2

Lyle is more mammal than reptile. He lives on East 88th street in New York with the Primm Family whom he adores. In his spare time he enjoys skipping double dutch, taking bubble baths, baking and spending hours antique shopping with Mrs. Primm. He’s also an avid ice skater. Lyle is so darn lovable it’s hard to imagine why his neighbor, Mr. Grumps doesn’t like him, but apparently some people don’t like having full-size crocodiles for neighbors, go figure. Authored by Bernard Waber and originally published 1965 as a sequel to “House on East 88th Street,” “Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile” is a hilarious story in the Lyle fiction series following this croc’s day to day adventures. Our toddlers love it and so do we and we’re pretty sure if this story were ever adapted to film, Lyle would be played by Bill Murray. $3.95, here.

Whales Are Mammals

Funny how so many of the facts we learned about mammals as kids can’t be found in the reaches of our mama brains. Whales are fish, right? Nope, air breathing mammals. Either way we like them and so do our kiddos. They’re large, but not menacing and in the case of this whale stuffie by Kate Durkin, downright sweet. We love this hand-embroidered little pillow. It’s the perfect addition to our tots growing collection of plush mammals. Measures about 9″ long, embroidered with heavy duty, mostly dog proof, thread on the front, and patterned fabric on the back. Excellent value for a handmade pillow or buddy. We say, yes. $22.00, here.

Mammals Do Lunch

munchler

One of our tots’ little friends carries a munchler lunch bag. We’ve admired it from a far for a while and here’s why. Not only does this lunch satchel resemble one of our favorite mammals, the tiger; it also converts from storage to place mat. Munchlers are the creation of Built NY and children’s book illustrator Stephen Savage and we think they make the perfect compact lunch pack solution. Lead tested, kid and food safe, the munchler is insulated, too. Sold. Excellent value. Four mammals of varying dimension. Benny measures 7.5” x 5” x 7″. $9.99 each, here.

GO Spotty, GO

Our new walker has been making up for lost time. We’re doing our best to keep up, but some days are a bit of a challenge. She’s really started to figure out pull toys, too. We’ve seen Spotty the Dog on several occasions at a friend’s house and our tot can’t get enough of this wiggling hound, which is why we had to include him in our mammals round up. This sweet Dalmation’s tail and body wag and head turns as tots pull him along by leash and collar. Rather fun, but Spotty does have a tendency to fall over. Constructed with renewable timber and materials in China. Measures 20″x 20″. $29.95, here.

What’s The Difference?

Mysterious cat, oh how our tots love to follow you around the house with butter covered fingers in hopes of giving you a gentle squeeze. So, it goes in this cleeo & bea mama’s house. Our kitty makes only brief appearances until sometime after our toddler has gone to bed. But it’s okay, we have many substitutes to appease our wee ones, including this super puzzle by kid o. We love it because it’s intended to encourage little ones to distinguish differences. Tabby cat, black and white, sitting, standing and jumping. Dang cute. Perfect for toddler hands and the 3+set. $13.95, here.

Not going to lie, our skills don’t exactly qualify us for a bowling team, but our kiddos love the game and we enjoy playing it with them. This wooden bowling set, found at palümba, is fantastic and the perfect size for small hands learning to bowl. Equipped with 2 balls for Skittle or standard American style bowling. Constructed from solid birch wood pieces. Set contains nine plain pins, one twin-striped headpin, two balls and a cloth bag for storage. A durable toy that will last through many kiddos. Arabian Nights

One of our tots has recently discovered the thrill of rocking and bouncing. Following their lead we thought it was time we invest in a few rockers and bouncers to keep the kiddos active during the winter months. We love this Arabian rocker by Plan Toys for its  minimal design, in particular we like that Sir horse has no hair or tassels. Our young toddler has had no problem mounting this rocker and is able to get a pretty good rocking motion going. Durable, good looking, eco-friendly and has been an excellent source of entertainment. Only thing we’d change is its size, could be a bit bigger. Constructed from replenishable rubber wood and with non-toxic lacquers. Recommended for 3+, but we say younger. Painless assembly. Measures 10.4″ x 27.6″ x 18.1″. $69.90, here.

Nothing warms our parental hearts more than seeing the look of satisfaction on our wee ones’ faces when they’ve thrown or kicked a ball. We live for these moments, so we have a lot of balls around the house. We have a few favorites and Crocodile Creek playground balls top our list. They’re durable, have survived some rough and tumble wrestles from dog and are just plain fun. Perfect for indoor/outdoor play. Lots of styles and two sizes to choose from. We love the 7″ cow. $8.99, here.

Slip Sliding Away

ikeaslide

It’s likely no surprise that we would include the Ikea Virre slide in our winter gym line up. Every time we’re in Ikea we see hordes of swedish meatball fueled tots gleefully climbing and sliding on it and our tots have tried it out, too. We’ve been doing our research and according to our findings, the Virre is moderately priced for a slide of it’s size and quality. Constructed from birch veneer, melamine foil and paper, the slide is wider than we’ve seen creating a more stable ride. Durable, good looking and great value. $149.00 at Ikea.

blondie_-_parallel_lines-489x489

Though we do like children’s music that encourages gross and fine motor development, sometimes we just want to rock out and so do our kiddos. Our toddlers go a bit nuts for Blondie, so we listen to them often and loud. There’s nothing better on a rainy day than dancing around the house to “Hangin’ On The Telephone” or doing a bit of twirling, skipping and singing to our older wee one’s favorite “Heart Of Glass.” Originally released in 1978 and digitally remastered in 2001, Parallel Lines was a groundbreaking album that we were quite fond of roller skating to. our skates have yet to come out of retirement, but we’ll never retire the music. $8.85, here.

Our kiddos are well on their way to becoming little gymnasts. They’ve been practicing their somersaults every day and have recently graduated from our bed to a floor mat. This mat by Alex is perfect for toddlers and pre-walkers. Wee ones can lay or roll on it while toddlers can work on their cartwheels and somersaults. Safe for indoor or outdoor use. Open, it measures 46″ wide x 72″ long, approximately 2″ thick. Folds efficiently for easy storage. We’ve seen the effects of wear and tear pretty early on, but expected with a tumbling mat. $84.99, here.
